ICS State of Arizona Chili Cookoff 2008

.

June 15th was Father's Day but it was also a wonderful day to Run to the Rim for the 2008 ICS State of Arizona Cookoff.

.

The day started off with mild, sunny weather in the Mogollon Rim mountain country of Payson, Arizona and things just heated up from there…literally. I think the thermometer topped out at 98 degrees and the wind gusts picked up in the afternoon toppling a few of the cook's canopies. But the damage was slight and the pots of chili were not adversely affected.

As they have always done, Linda Mathiesen and Terri Shelow along with the staff of the Mazatzal Casino did a great job of set up and preparation for this cookoff. Everything had been well thought out and every detail had been addressed. The cooks were taken care of in style and all enjoyed the day of cooking among friends and fellow chiliheads.

We welcomed some new cooks to ICS and welcomed back some others who haven't cooked for a few years. Among those was Barry Hewitt, formerly of Woburn, MA, but now of Gilbert, AZ and his son Larry. Barry hasn't cooked since he moved to Arizona 2 years ago. However, his son Larry caught Chilihead Fever and wanted to start cooking and encouraged his dad to join him. It was very nice to see them and add them to the roster of Arizona cooks. There were a few cooks like Michael Abraham and Norma Kemp that we haven't seen for a while who also added their skills as contestants for the day and some first time cooks such as Susan Hyden, Keo Lynch and Joe Salas. Susan and Keo are familiar to the chili world as chairman and assistant of the Valley of the Sun Regional and Copper State Regional cookoffs in Ahwatukee, AZ. But they too caught the Chili Bug and tried their hand at cooking as the Hot Mamas Chili Team. Joe Salas also joined the list of cooks with his Salsa Joe's Chili. We are .very fortunate to welcome these cooks to ICS.

Chief Judge and Scorekeeper, Dick and Nancy Swenberger, along with a fine group of both local and seasoned judges, judged and tabulated the scores. And the results were:

Southwest Regional and New Mexico State

Set your schedule for June 28 and 29 at the Sky City Casino in Acoma, NM. The Casino is hosting both the Southwest Regional on Saturday and the New Mexico State Championship for the 2nd time on Sunday. Besides the great prize money, same on both days, the casino also gives away some Acoma pottery that may be worth more than the cash in your hand. And they do this down to third place in all 3 categories! Very friendly folks at the casino. They have a room rate for the cooks and the hotel is attached to the casino, so convenience is excellent for this cookoff. You can back your vehicle right up to your booth. For those of you who like to imbibe, this casino is dry, but you can byob, as long as you are discreet about it. Chief Judge is Paul Whitney from Arizona, who will be assisted in the judging area by the Plagers and the Caimis. New Mexico was well represented last year, as Salsa Winner Bonnie Tomasek of Colorado was 2nd in the world and Red Winner James Rasey of California made it to top 30 in the world too. Look forward to seeing you in the Land of Enchantment the last weekend of June!
