MONDAY - Sept. 22, 2008

Connecticut State

The Connecticut State Chili Cookoff had the best. The best weather this year, the best volunteers (the Community Action Agency), the best charity (the CAA for Meals on Wheels), the best organizer (Sharon Willard) and the BEST chili cooks. That included 2007 2nd place Verde winner, Dave Lorenz; 2007 4th place Red winner, Mike Kropp and of course, the reigning 2007 Red Chili Champion, Jerry Buma.

We had a terrific turn out and all the cooks were feverishly handing out the chili while trying to make their best pot for the last chance in the Northeast to qualify for the World Championships. It was a full circle and a little emotional for Jerry Buma this year, because he had won this cookoff last year and went on to win the World Championships. Sharon did a wonderful job keeping everyone going and was handling 5 things at once. I can't imagine anyone else juggling things the way she does. This cookoff seems to get bigger each year, and for good reason. The spectators love it, the Community Action Agency loves it, and the cooks love it. The best part, it is for one of the neediest programs in the state today, Meals on Wheels. Thanks to all the cooks who were able to judge and for those who helped us out in the judging tent.
