JOE HARVEY Update
Hi all.
.
First of all, sorry to hear about Doc Dowling. He was a great guy. You could tell from talking to him and watching him compete that he put his heart into his chili cooking.....he loved the competition and the people. He will be sorely missed. It's forced me to realize that what I, and a few others of you, went through during cancer treatment, was easy.....considering the alternative.
.
I've been done with the treatments for almost two months. My doc tells me he's pretty confident that the tumor is gone. I'll go in for another PET scan next week, and that will show for sure, if they got everything. I can only hope. Eight weeks of radiation and chemo was enough for me.
.
Recovering is still ongoing. My throat is not close to being normal. I still have problems swallowing certain foods....especially spicy foods. They burn like Hell. And, I'm weak as a kitten. Climbing a flight of stairs is a definite problem. I worked out in the garden at Sue's house, and it damned near killed me! However...all is not lost. Afterwards, I was able to sit on the back porch, in the sunshine, catch a few rays and have a few beers after work was done. But, I'm still weak. I can't hang like I used to.
.
Two weeks ago I gave myself a trip to
.
Doc tells me it could be six months to a year before my throat returns to "normal". I don't know if that will give me any time to cook this year, but I'll still be at Wachusett Mountain and Wells, Maine as chief judge. I would like to try the MA State cook off, but I just don't know if I'll be ready.
.
So anyway. Thanks to you all who have kept in touch and asked for these updates to see how I was doing. Getting your e-mails and requests for the updates helped me get through the entire mess of treatments. Although, I have to admit that I miss some of my drug-induced episodes! "Better living through chemicals", I've been told.
.
Hopefully, my last episode will be to inform you that the Docs got everything and that I'm all done with the hellacious routine of cancer treatment.
.
Thanks and love to all,
.
Joe
