33rd Annual California State Championship   -   Karen Ray
It was a perfect chili day in San Bernardino.  Light jackets were needed most of the day because of light breezes and temperatures around 70 degrees.  This is the largest single event in San Bernardino; it continues to be the most popular with the public.  Add to this the fact that it was Cinco de Mayo weekend, and the crowd was even larger than usual.

There was something for everyone---a large turnout of PT Cruisers, an assemblage of teardrop trailers, the 2nd Annual Menudo contest, an Open and Restaurant division, an Open salsa contest, a Firefighters challenge, Mr. Hot Sauce, Ms. Chili Pepper, Little Ms. Chili Pepper, a chili eating contest (the winner ate three 16-ounce bowls in 5 minutes!), Shoot 'n' Holler, Karaoke contests all day, a Western stunt show, a dunk tank featuring local politicians, vendors, a raffle and, of course, the usual chili cookoff contests: Salsa (21 entries), People's Choice Chili (everyone), Chili Verde (17 entries) and Traditional Red Chili (37 entries).

Chairman Mike Austin put together his usual well-organized event, assisted by his family and by Los Padrinos, a local youth service organization.  Major sponsors of the event were Walker Foods (the manufacturer of El Pato Products), Juanitas Foods (who sponsored the Menudo contest) and The Friends of San Bernardino Parks (who also worked tirelessly to organize the event).  Chief Judge was Bill Ray.  Scorekeepers for the ICS events were Karen Ray, Mary Ellen Weber, Allene Macklin and Patti Summers.  Scorekeeper for the non-ICS events was Donnie Gordon, assisted by Willma Maehl and Linda Porter.  Emcees on the two stages were Steve Porter and Claude Covington.  Site Coordinator was Dennis Macklin.  Many other folks helped in various capacities, too numerous to mention, but all are hugely appreciated.

And the winners were:
Best Decorated Booth and Best Showmanship: Udo Winkler, Parrot Head Chili

Salsa:
3rd, Bob Dyer
2nd, Charlie Blosfield
1st, Janice Moody.  Janice won this contest in 2002, 2003 and 2004.  In 2005 she had already qualified for salsa and could not compete; her husband, Mitch, won the contest.

ICS People's Choice Chili:
3rd, Geraldine Villalpando
2nd, Leo Nolen
1st, Jesse Trueba

Chili Verde:
3rd, Kenner Peterson (11 points)
2nd, Mike Ford (17 points)
1st, Mitch Moody (with a whopping 33!! points)  Mitch also won this contest in 2005

5th, Bill Woodring
4th, Charlie Blosfield
3rd, Sheila Beller
2nd, Jim Rasey
1st, Leo Nolen of Crestline, CA

High Sierra/Northern Nevada Regional's    -    Bob Grayson
BACK-TO-BACK REGIONALS--Mark your calendars--July 15 and July 16. The HIGH SIERRA REGIONAL and the NORTHERN NEVADA REGIONAL COOKOFFS will be back on the grass at Glen Eagles Restaurant in Carson City, Nevada. We are adding a large craft show. All proceeds will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada and the Cancer Care Center at the Carson-Tahoe Regional Medical Center, a brand new state-of-the-art facility just down the road from the cookoffs. Lots of fun planned. More info on hotels, etc will be forthcoming.
