33rd Annual Missouri Chili Cook-Off & Salsa Competition

The National Kidney Foundation is heating things up this fall with the 33rd Annual Missouri Chili Cook-Off & Salsa Competition-

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 27,2008

.

Saint Louis, Missouri. Every fall just as the Midwestern air begins to turn cool and crisp things start heating up at the Missouri State Chili Cook-Off and Salsa Competition. This year's event is scheduled for Saturday, September 27, 2008 and the winner will qualify just in time to move on to the ICS World's Championship Chili Cook-Off in Omaha, Nebraska. With live music, enthusiastic showmanship competitions, sponsor booths, food vendors, kid's entertainment and large crowds, "it's like a mini "world" event", says long-time participant, Chris Toney.

.

The Cook-Off has become a local tradition for thousands of chili, salsa and music lovers, and has generated an estimated one million dollars for National Kidney Foundation of Eastern Missouri and Metro East!

.

Over 50 professional and amateur chefs will compete side-by-side for cash prizes in the following categories: Red Chili, Green Chili (chili verde), and Salsa, as well as People's Choice Chili, Vegetarian Chili and Salsa. Prizes will also be awarded for showmanship and fundraising.

.

The winning red chili chef will win $600 and the opportunity to compete in the International Chili Society's World Championship Chili Cook-Off, where the Grand Prize winner receives a check for $25,000.00!

This year's event, scheduled for September 27th from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. will feature three of the areas hottest bands: Johnny Rock-Itt, Whiskey Creek and the Shrinking Violets. "It's about great music and great food, all for a great cause," says Cook-Off Chairman, Michael Goldstein.

.

Some of the best chili and salsa recipes in the region will be on hand for the tasting, but there will also be plenty of tasty treats for those who can't take the heat. Participants and spectators can enjoy a wide array of festival favorites, including grilled chicken breasts, burgers, brats and portabella mushroom sandwiches, as well as fruit smoothies, frozen lemonade and kettle corn.

.

This family friendly event offers something for everyone. Kids will enjoy the inflatable obstacle course, games, crafts and costumed characters in our Kids Corner. Parents, check out our Bin Spin raffle, where everyone's a winner. For those who prefer "people watching," pull up a chair and relax in our beverage garden near the Main Stage!

.

Proceeds from the Cook-Off support National Kidney Foundation of Eastern Missouri and Metro East programs, including: free kidney health screenings, patient assistance, public, patient and professional education and medical research funding.

.

Admission to the Missouri Chili Cook-Off is $5.00 per person. Samples are just 50 cents. Kids under 12 are admitted free. For information, call (314) 961-2828, or email laura.deutschmann@kidney.org.
