Big Bear Old Miners Chili Cook-Off

July 11, 2009

I'm (Mark Gaines) getting back involved with our cook-off , in spite of trying

to retire from organizing , and just enjoy the event . I've called several of our most faithful cookers , and already have around 20 , who promise to come . I'm the new contact person , so all inquiries should call me @ 909 -363-6592 . I'm available 24 - 7 , and will promtly mail out applications to anyone who calls me . I don't do on-line sign-ups , and am quite comfortable with the US Postal Service .

Our event is July the 11th , same location , at the Chamber of Commerce parking lot , in scenic Big Bear Lake, CA . Our site has been expanded , to include an Old west Re-enacting group , complete with shoot-outs . Also , we will probably have a new band , the exciting "Southern Rock's Finest" , with many all-stars . Our vendors will enjoy a two-day venue , with our "Miss Clementine Pagaent" on Sunday , with music & shoot-outs . etc. I've been talking to several veteran cooks , who have already qualified , who hope to come and judge , which always improves the quality of competition . I will serve "Old Miners" chili all day ,

made by a local restaurant , so there's always chili available , the lack of which confuses those who don't understand competition timing , etc. I would greatly appreciate any help that you can give in getting the word out about our cook-off , and hope you are here , again . Old Town Elk Grove - River City Regional

We are still Looking for Cooks & Judges

The Old Town Elk Grove River City Regional Chili Cookoff is slated for Saturday, June 6, 2009. If you have not already sent in your application, to cook or RSVP to judge, please do so as soon as possible. We expect over 50 cooks, 10,000 - 15,000 public attendees. Old Town closes Main Street for over 4 blocks, a main stage for LIVE entertainment, secondary stages with Karaoke, Teen Idols, Jazz and Children's music. Our main stage will be surrounded by the Food Court and Beer Garden. There will be a huge kid's area with petting zoo, pony rides, bounce houses and plenty of kid's games.

We need to know if you are planning to cook at the River City Regional Cookoff. Please, check your calendars and come on back to the Old West and cook your best pot of Chili. It would be a great help if you would sign up on-line at http://www.chilicookoff/ .com. It will let me know you are coming and what categories you are competing in. Plus, I will print them and bring to the cookoff; you will NOT have to complete another application. This will speed up the check in process.

You will need to bring all of your own equipment, including tables, chairs, canopies, stoves, utensils, and a fire extinguisher. If you are flying in, please let me know ASAP and I can arrange for a table and chairs. The fire department may come by looking to inspect your fire extinguisher. If you have an extra, please bring them. If you think you may have a problem, please let me know and we'll do everything we can to help.

Lake Las Vegas I know a lot of you have never heard of it. It lies just a little North East of Henderson, Nevada a beautiful man-made lake. But rather than me tell you about it let's take a look at it through the miracle of your computer. Just slide on over to: www.lakelasvegas.com and take a look at the beautiful pictures on their website. Note the rather large yacht on the Lake which impressed the hell out of me. It is like taking a mini vacation to Europe without the long airplane ride and the annoying jet lag and you can leave your passport at home. Imagine yourself cooking chili on the streets of Portofino or Rome or maybe even Venice! And if you're Italiano is not so good we will find you a good interpreter.

I know there are a couple of you out there that are saying why are you having a cookoff in June in southern Nevada? Yes it will be a little warm but remember it is a dry heat. All you need is a water spray bottle like the one you might find at Smart & Final and you have instant air-conditioning. It really works quite well in the low humidity. Average humidity is 9%. With the Lake only a stone's throw away it should provide a nice breeze. You will be able to drive your vehicle to your cooking area to unload and we will have golf carts to ferry you back from the parking area. And of course take you back to your vehicle after the cookoff is over. There is a set of commercial sinks in the judging area for the cook's to use washing up, first-class. We have an excellent judges panel most of which are ICS members and cooks or have judged at the WCCC. Here is a chance to cook chili with a European feel, and who knows it could be you advancing to the World's Championship Chili Cookoff. And for the cooks in the rest of this great country I extend to you an invitation as well. There are some great bargains on accommodations to be had right now in Las Vegas. And what happens in Vegas doesn't necessarily stay in Vegas. We will have to post the names of the winners. So come and join us at Monte Lago Village Lake Las Vegas for some fun in the sun and lots of shade too.
