ORMLY GUMFUDGIN

Ormly Gumfudgin, aka Stan Locke, passed away the 15th of May, 2009. Besides being a loving husband and grandfather he was a well-known and well-traveled chili judge, accomplished bazooka player, local newspaper columnist and stand-up comedian.

Born Clarence Stanley Locke November 4th, 1922 in Aberdeen, Washington, he grew up in the Quinault Lake region before moving east to attend Washington State College in Pullman, where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, and became the morning disc jockey for the college radio station. His show was called Googy's Coffee Pot Parade and when he graduated in 1946 with a degree in communications he came to Southern California to further his career in radio and television.

He spent many happy years at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena as head of the Employees Recreation Club and editor of the monthly company publication "Lab-Oratory".

He was active in the barbershop singers' organization S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. and served as chapter president more than once. His two sons attribute their trained ears for vocal harmonies to falling asleep every Tuesday evening of their young lives with the glorious sounds of four part quartet rehearsals in the living room.

He was a member of the Writers Guild of America and the local chapter of the Western Writers Association, who encourage and promote stories about cowboys and the old west. He was an active member of the local chapter of E Clampus Vitus who also promote an old western gold rush-type lifestyle.

But he will probably be most fondly remembered as the Official Historian of the International Chili Society and he had attended every World Championship Chili Cookoff since its inception in 1967. He was the only founding member to have been to all of the World Cookoffs until unfortunately he missed the Forty-second annual gathering in 2008, after having been diagnosed with cancer and undergoing chemotherapy.

His column "Warmly, Ormly" ran in his hometown newspaper for over forty years and his warm wit and unique brand of humor were enjoyed regularly by many.

His "Bazookastry" trio's cover of Madonna's 1980's hit "Like a Virgin" struck a note with young and old alike and can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3UDZX9Dc0Q.

He is survived by his wife Edi, two sons Russ and Bob; and as of last count, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He would ask that his passing not be mourned, but rather that his memory be celebrated fondly for every little ray of sunshine he was able to spread while he was here.

.
This is one of the premier cookoffs of the year again! It is in beautiful Big Bear Lake, CA in the San Bernardino Mountains. It is not conflicting with any other cookoffs so I hope to be able to see everyone! If you are already qualified, please feel free to come and judge! We can use the help! When I get more info I will pass it on. If you would like to contact me via computer you can use my e-mail address:
valgereghty@hotmail.com or call me at 928-486-4099. Mark Gaines has been the person we have depended on for the last several years and he does a beautiful job. I am not sure about the calcutta yet but will pass that on also. For those that have not been to Big Bear, you are missing out on a fun day and now it looks like they are going to have another event on Sunday that you can stick around for. It is the Miss Clementine Contest where the folks dress up in period dress and are judged. It is a fun event for those who have never seen it. Mike Austin will be there as our MC again this year, Mark Sweeney will be chief judge and I along with Donnie will be head scorekeepers. Hope to see you there!
